Selling your car is much easier when you’ve got the right paperwork sorted. Buyers feel confident, the handover is smoother, and you avoid any surprises on the day. Here’s a quick guide to what you need in NSW — including the Pink Slip and Blue Slip, which are essential if your car is older or unregistered.
1. Proof of Ownership
Buyers need to know you’re the legal owner. You can show:
Your Registration Certificate, or
A receipt / bill of sale from when you purchased the vehicle
This establishes you’re the rightful seller.
2. NSW Transfer of Registration (online or paper)
Ownership is transferred through Service NSW.
You can complete the transfer:
Online (the easiest way), or
In person using a paper Application for Transfer of Registration form
Bring:
Your driver licence
The vehicle’s rego details
Buyers generally expect to complete or initiate the transfer on the day.
3. A Valid eSafety Check (Pink Slip) — if the car is registered and over 5 years old
If your car is registered and more than five years old, it needs a valid Pink Slip.
The Pink Slip confirms:
The car is roadworthy
It’s eligible for registration renewal or transfer
Buyers will often ask:
When the Pink Slip was completed
Whether it passed
How long it’s valid for
A current Pink Slip helps your car sell faster.
4. Blue Slip — if the car is unregistered
If your car is not registered, you must have a Blue Slip to sell or re-register it in NSW.
A Blue Slip is a more detailed inspection that confirms:
The car’s identity
Roadworthiness
That the vehicle is suitable for registration
This is critical. If you bring an unregistered car to the Flemington Car Market at Paddy’s, you must bring:
Your Blue Slip, and
Any supporting identity/vehicle documents
Buyers will not consider an unregistered car without a valid Blue Slip.
5. Registration Certificate (Rego Papers)
Not mandatory for the sale, but extremely helpful.
It shows:
Rego status
Expiry date
Vehicle details
If you’ve misplaced it, Service NSW can reissue it.
6. Proof of Identity
You’ll need to show ID when completing a transfer:
NSW driver licence, or
Other approved ID
Simple, but essential.
7. A Receipt / Proof of Purchase
After the sale, issue a receipt with:
Date
Sale price
Buyer + seller names
VIN and plate number
Signatures
This protects both parties and avoids disputes.
8. Helpful Extras That Boost Buyer Confidence
Not required, but highly recommended:
Service history
Logbooks
Recent repair receipts
Owner’s manual
Spare keys
These often justify a stronger price.
